What is the most important thing to keep in mind as an educator?
子どもたちが何を学び、何を感じているかをよく観察し、耳を傾けることです。子どもたちには自ら成長していく力があり、その力を持っていることを信じています。教育活動をするときは、その力を見極めて、見守るときなのか、教えるときなのかを判断し、成長の機会を奪わないように気をつけています。
The most important thing is to listen carefully and observe what the students are learning and feeling. Students have an innate ability to grow. My job is to recognize when a child is growing and decide whether to leave them be or teach them. I am careful not to rob them of their opportunity to grow.
卒業後、どのような人になってほしいですか？
What qualities do you want the students to have after they graduate?
自分を大切に、他者を大切に、環境を大切にできる人。
人は、さまざまな環境で育った人々と関わりながら生きていきます。自分のことや周りの人たちのことを知ることは必要ですが、子どもたちを見ていると、自分との違いに出会ったときに受け入れたり、相手の視点に立って考えたりすることは、彼ら自身が満たされていないとなかなか難しい場面が見られます。
まずは、子どもたち本人のニーズや欲求への理解や状況整理をする力、そして、困難な出来事に直面したときに、課題解決に挑戦し、時に助けを求めながらも協働して実行する力が育まれることができれば、自分だけでなく周りの人々や環境に対して自分ごととして考える人物に育っていくのではないかと思います。
I want them to be thoughtful of themselves, others and the environment.
In our daily lives, we interact with people who grew up in different environments. While it is important to understand yourself and those around you, students often have difficulty seeing things from someone else’s point of view when they encounter something that’s different from themselves unless they are satisfied.
Students can grow by developing the ability to understand their peers’ needs and wants and understand the situation. They also need to address difficult issues as they arise. By cooperating with others and taking action, they will develop a sense of responsibility for the problems that may be happening around them.
担当教科の面白さは？
What is something interesting about the subject you teach?
算数は、能力差がわかりやすく出てしまう教科ではありますが、問いによってはどの子どもでも参加し試行錯誤する活動ができます。子どもたちには、苦手だなと思っても、挑戦したり、ヘルプを出したりしながらクラスメートと学ぶことは、実は面白く意味があるのかもしれないと気づいてくれたら嬉しいです。
Mathematics is a subject in which students’ abilities can differ greatly. But depending on the problem, it allows for participation and experimentation. I hope they enjoy challenging themselves and helping each other out.
これまでの教員生活で、特にやりがいを感じたことは？
What has been the most rewarding moment of your teaching career so far?
高学年を担当した時に、学ぶことに意欲がなくなっていた生徒に出会いました。
好きなことは？興味のあることは？と聞いても、ゲームぐらいと答えるだけ。友達と楽しそうに遊んではいましたが、学習に自信や興味がなくなっていたことにとても心配になりました。
学習無気力症候群のような状態かなと思い、その子どもの様子を観察するようにしました。やりたくないわけではないのですが、正解を探している様子にも見えました。また、ゴール設定が遠いまたは見えないかもしれないとも思いました。
それからは、何か一つ言葉を発したり、ノートに単語を書いただけでその行動に着目し、褒めるというよりは、行動したことを評価しました。内容を問うことはなく、ただただ聞くことに徹し続けると、3カ月過ぎぐらいから、「わかったかも。」という言葉がその生徒から飛び出しました。その瞬間は、ガッツポーズです。
生徒によって、成長するタイミングやきっかけはさまざまですが、その瞬間に出会える喜びは、教員のやりがいの一つです。
When I taught upper grade students, there was a student who lost interest in learning.
Even when I asked what they liked or asked about hobbies, they would only say things such as “video games”. That student seemed to enjoy playing with friends but I was concerned that they seemed to not have much interest or confidence in learning.
I suspected it might be a case of learned helplessness so I decided to keep an eye on them. The student was uninterested; they just seemed to struggle to find the right answer. Maybe the problem was that the goal they had set was too far away or not very clear.
From then on, I evaluated them based on even the smallest of actions, such as saying a word, or writing something down in their notebook. I didn’t ask about the content but I made sure to listen. After about three months, that student said “I think I get it”. At that moment, I wanted to pump my fists.
You never know when or how a student will have a breakthrough but being present for one is one of the most rewarding moments of teaching.

What do you think makes the education at KIA appealing?
子どもたちにより良い教育環境を提供するために、学校移転や教員への研修提供、イベントの実施などさまざまな挑戦と実践を繰り返し、それらを時代の流れとともに振り返り調整しながらも、挑戦し続けている学校だと思います。
CISやIB認定は、認定されるまでに膨大な労力と時間がかかっています。また、それらを維持または高い質にするために日々の実践を行っています。これらを日英バイリンガルで長い間続けていくことは、簡単なことではなく、歴代のスタッフたちと卒業した生徒たち、保護者の方々が近い距離で創り上げてきたことは誇れることだと思います。
当たり前ですが、いつも楽しい学校生活であったわけではありません。常にうまくいかなかったことや足りなかったことはクローズアップされてきましたが、それが功を奏したのか問題を解決する力が養われたのか、KIAは教員・スタッフ・保護者の方々の主体性や自己成長を引き出してくれる特徴も持ち合わせているように感じます。
To provide the best learning environment for our students, we’ve continuously taken on multiple challenges such as changing locations, providing training for the teaching staff and holding events. We adapt to the times, making adjustments and continuing to challenge ourselves.
Becoming accredited by CIS and IB takes a tremendous amount of time and effort. We take steps everyday to maintain and improve ourselves. It is not easy to implement these improvements over a long period in both Japanese and English. I am proud of what we’ve built with our staff, students and parents over the years.
Needless to say, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. We’ve always highlighted things that fell through or fell short but through that process I think we’ve learned to solve problems. I feel like KIA brings out the ability to act independently and grow in teachers, staff and parents.
他の教員との連携やサポート体制について教えてください。
What are your thoughts on working relationships with your coworkers and the support system?
どの先生方も生徒の成長やサポートについて親身に話し合っている印象です。また、自身が困ったことがあったり、突発的な緊急事案の場合などがあったりした場合でも、新人・ベテラン関係なく、協力できる雰囲気があります。
Teachers have open discussions about how to help the students. We support each other whenever we need them or in case of an emergency. It doesn’t matter if you’re a new teacher or a veteran teacher.

小学校6年間は、心も体も大きな変化がある時期です。楽しいことばかりではなく、対立やけんかもあります。しかし、現場の教員は、どんなことが起こっても、常に何があったのかを冷静に判断し、子どもたちの学びを阻害しないように自分たちで解決できるよう導きます。そのように導くことができるのは、保護者の方々との連携があってこそだと思います。
ありがたいことに、担当させていただいた生徒の保護者の方々は、みなさんご自身のお子様だけではなく、他のお子様のことも本当に大切に考えてくださる方ばかりなので、安心して子どもたちに向き合うことができました。

Over the course of six years of elementary school, the students go through many physical and mental changes. It’s not always fun and games. Sometimes, there will be arguments and fights. But the teachers calmly assess the situation and will help the students resolve the issue while still helping them grow. This would not be possible without the cooperation from the parents.
Thankfully, the parents of the students I was in charge of were mindful not only of their children but also of their friends. This made it easier for me to interact with them.

Every child should be cherished. Teachers and parents want to provide the best learning environment for children.
But there are no right answers when it comes to teaching children. It is a series of trial and error and and we never know when children will have a breakthrough or grow.
At KIA, we teach our students that they are valuable individuals. They will also have plenty of opportunities to reflect on their identities. Children who understand their own worth and feel at ease are able to learn independently.
