先生として最も大切にしていることは？
What is the most important thing to keep in mind as an educator?
Something that I have always considered important is to never forget that we are role models for our students. Whatever values, or behaviours we want our students to embody, should be shown through our own values and behaviours. If you want your students to enjoy your lessons, then it is vital that you also enjoy your lessons, and enjoy having the students around you. If you want your students to develop curiosity and passion, then model that for them. Let them see it in you. We don’t feel our best everyday, but when we step into that classroom, teachers need to be their best selves.
Also, preparation. If there’s one thing I have learned over 15 years of teaching, it is to never enter a class unprepared, or even underprepared.
私が常に大切にしてきたのは、私たちが生徒たちの模範であることを決して忘れないことです。生徒たちにどんな価値観や行動を身につけてほしいとしても、それは私たち自身の価値観や行動を通して示すべきです。
生徒たちに授業を楽しんでほしいなら、先生自身も授業を楽しみ、生徒たちと一緒にいることを楽しむことが不可欠です。生徒たちに好奇心と情熱を育んでほしいなら、それを生徒たちに示しましょう。生徒たちに、あなた自身の中にそれを見てもらいましょう。私たちは毎日最高の気分でいるわけではありませんが、教室に入った瞬間、教師は最高の自分でなければなりません。
そして、準備も重要です。15年間の教師生活で私が学んだことが一つあるとすれば、それは準備不足、あるいは準備不足でさえも、決して授業に臨んではいけないということです。
卒業後、どのような人になってほしいですか？
What qualities do you want the students to have after they graduate?
After graduating secondary school I think there’s no reason to look past the IB learner profile attributes and the Approaches to Learning. As an IB school, we are actively building these values and skills into our students and hoping that they stick. Outside of this, however, I would like our students leaving school with a sense of self-belief. Having the confidence to tackle, and succeed in different situations in a world that is so uncertain is a vital attribute to have these days.
This confidence is not born from nothing, but from evidence of their own struggles and achievements built up over their years at KIA. Through multilingual environments, overseas travel and a multitude of other challenges, they should leave our school believing that they are people who rise to every challenge and bring value to the world, in whatever small (or large) way they choose.
中等教育を卒業したからといって、IBの学習者像や学習アプローチを無視する必要はないと考えています。IBスクールとして、私たちは生徒たちにこれらの価値観とスキルを積極的に育み、それらが定着することを願っています。しかし、それ以外にも、生徒たちには自信をもって卒業してもらいたいと考えています。
不確実な世界において、さまざまな状況に取り組み、成功するための自信を持つことは、現代において不可欠な要素です。この自信は、何もないところから生まれるものではなく、KIAでの長年の苦労と成果の積み重ねによって生まれるものです。多言語環境、海外旅行、そしてその他多くの困難を乗り越え、生徒たちは、どんな小さなことでも大きなことでも、あらゆる困難に立ち向かい、世界に価値をもたらす人間であると確信して、本校を卒業するはずです。
担当教科の面白さは？
What is something interesting about the subject you teach?
Drama is such an experiential subject. It challenges students to take themselves out of their comfort zone in order to find their artistic potential. I really want my students to discover their own capabilities and to uncover the joy that performance can bring. It not only benefits them in drama subjects, but their communicative and creative skills can also be transferred to other subjects and pursuits as well. Hopefully my students see the life-long value in what they build in their drama studies.
演劇は非常に体験的な科目です。生徒たちは、自分の芸術的可能性を発見するために、自分のコンフォートゾーンから抜け出すことを迫られます。生徒たちには、自分自身の能力を発見し、パフォーマンスがもたらす喜びを見出してほしいと心から願っています。演劇を学ぶことは、彼らにとって有益なだけでなく、コミュニケーション能力や創造力といったスキルを他の科目や活動にも活かすことができます。生徒たちが、演劇の学習で培ったものが生涯にわたる価値を持つことを理解してくれることを願っています。
これまでの教員生活で、特にやりがいを感じたことは？
What has been the most rewarding moment of your teaching career so far?
The most rewarding part of my job is the relationships I build with my students, and the way I get to see them grow as individuals over the years. From fresh faced grade 7 students, unsure of their place in the school, to confident leaders in the upper grades. It truly is a privilege to see them embrace the culture and mindset the school is trying to create.
私の仕事で最もやりがいを感じるのは、生徒たちと築く信頼関係と、彼らが年月をかけて一人一人の成長を見守れることです。学校での自分の居場所に迷い、初々しいG7（中学1年生）から、自信に満ちた高学年のリーダーへと成長していく姿。彼らが学校が築こうとしている文化や考え方を受け入れていく姿を見るのは、本当に光栄です。

How would you describe KIA?
At secondary school, the atmosphere is one of community. Teachers and students build close relationships and are able to interact both in class and outside of the classroom in the school building and during school events. The teachers at secondary school all work in the same office and are able to share ideas and collaborate whenever they want. The students all know each other and the older students welcome the younger and newer students warmly. They are always on hand to provide guidance and support to those in need.
中高等部では、コミュニティとしての雰囲気が漂っています。教師と生徒は親密な関係を築き、授業中だけでなく、校内や学校行事など、教室外でも交流を深めることができます。中高等部の教員は全員同じオフィスで勤務しており、いつでもアイデアを共有し、協力し合うことができます。生徒は皆、お互いをよく知っており、上級生は下級生や新入生を温かく迎え入れます。彼らは常に、困っている生徒に指導とサポートを提供します。

KIA’s bilingual curriculum is obviously a feature that allows it to stand apart from both local Japanese schools and other international schools.

What does KIA mean to you?
I have been with KIA for 10 years and worked in different departments, in a range of different roles. KIA has been a place where I have been able to (re)discover my passion for teaching, and build my identity as an educator. I have developed my skills and knowledge within the IB framework and have become a better teacher for it. KIA will always hold a special significance for me.

To send your child to KIA is to send them to a caring, supportive and rigorous academic and pastoral environment. KIA works on building the necessary skills and attributes in our students so that they may succeed in life both during and after they graduate. Over the years, our students build confidence in their language and academic capacity to the point where they are able to succeed at the DP level in both English and Japanese.
At our school, we work on a holistic approach to education, placing just as much emphasis on the creative arts, as we do the academic requirements. We pride ourselves on providing music, drama, visual arts and design classes as vehicles for creative expression.
