Nurturing ‘Language’ and ‘Thinking Skills’ Together as a Family
Why International Schools Value Japanese in the Age of AI
【Guest Speaker】
Monami Yasui (Secondary Japanese Teacher, Kansai International Academy Kobe Campus)
【Content】
In this emerging age of AI, the skill most in demand is the ability to deepen one’s own thinking and express it clearly to others through words.
‘Language’ and ‘thinking skills’ are inextricably linked. However, genuine critical thinking cannot be developed simply by memorizing vocabulary lists. What matters most is discovering seeds of intellectual curiosity in everyday life-thinking through them and expressing them in your own words. Fostering thinking skills requires no extraordinary study; everyday casual conversations and interactions are the single most powerful key.
In September’s Coffee Morning, we will introduce practical activities you can easily try at home alongside a window into our MYP Japanese classes, illustrating the inquiry journey that bridges PYP to DP.
Highlights of the Session
• Why do we value Japanese in an international school? Discover what students learn in MYP Japanese to fulfill KIA’s educational philosophy: ‘Developing leaders who contribute to global society with creativity and responsibility through bilingual inquiry-based learning in English and Japanese.’ We will highlight how our approach differs from conventional Japanese national curriculum language classes through concrete examples.
• Practical tips and home activities you can start today!
We will offer practical advice on age-appropriate conversational techniques at home, reading strategies, and home study habits. This session aims to help address everyday questions and concerns such as ‘My child struggles with writing,’ ‘How important is kanji learning?’ or ‘What kind of study habits should we build?’
This Session is Perfect for:
• Parents of all grade levels are interested in fostering critical thinking and self-expression at home in the AI era.
• Parents curious about bilingual education and the role of native language learning in an inquiry-based international school setting.
• Parents seeking practical tips on supporting reading, writing, kanji practice, and positive parent-child dialogue.
Casual daily conversations lay the root system for your child’s rich thinking skills. ‘How should I talk with my child at home?’ ‘How can we overcome a hesitation toward writing?’ Let’s address these everyday questions together in a casual environment! We will also host a Q&A session. Grab a cup of coffee and join us for an inspiring and relaxing morning. We look forward to seeing you there!
