関西国際学園が推進する「グローバルコラボレーション」と「教育の質の向上」に向けた取り組みの一環として、乳幼児・幼稚園部門のリーダーを務める教員が、オーストラリア・クイーンズランド州にあるロックハンプトン・グラマー・スクール（RGS）にて、1週間の教員交換プログラムに参加しました。
滞在中は、英語科主任のリサ・ジェンキン先生と学年主任のバリー・ジェンキン先生のご家庭にホームステイをさせていただきました。
同じ「学校運営を担うリーダー」という立場の先生方と寝食を共にできたことは、オーストラリアの教育文化を深く理解する上で、かけがえのない経験となりました。
日中の業務が終わったあとも、リーダーシップのあり方や生徒への精神的ケア、寄宿制学校ならではの工夫について、夜遅くまで語り合う日々は非常に刺激的なものとなりました。
また、広報担当のアシュリー・ハービー氏に案内していただいたキャンパスツアーでは、その施設の充実ぶりに驚かされました。
広大なラグビー場や農場、キャンプ場、さらには本格的なワークアウトルームや調理室、美術室など、生徒の個性を伸ばすための多様な環境が整っていました。
寄宿舎では、カーステン・メイ・トーマス氏の案内のもと、寮生活を送る生徒たちの生き生きとした日常に触れることもできました。
今回の研修の主な目的は、ELC、幼稚園、および準備学級（プレップ）の視察です。
ELCディレクターのアデイナ・シャケルトン氏や主任教諭の方々と、教育の枠組みについて非常に実りある議論を交わすことができました。
特に印象的だったのは、子どもたちの自主性を尊重する「遊び中心の学び」と、読み書き・計算の基礎を固める「明示的な指導」を、RGSがいかに高いレベルで両立させているかという点です。また、屋外環境を活かした「リスキー・プレイ（あえて危険を伴う遊び）」を通じて、子どもたちの回復力（レジリエンス）を育むアプローチには、大きなインスピレーションを受けました。
今回の訪問で最も心温まる瞬間の一つが、RGSに留学しているKIAのG10（高校1年生）の生徒たちとの再会でした。音楽の発表会では、見事な演奏を披露してくれ、その成長した姿に胸が熱くなりました。
他の日本人留学生たちも、新しい環境で逞しく、生き生きと過ごしており、彼らのさらなる飛躍を確信しました。
この1週間の研修は、私たちにとって極めて大きな財産となりました。ここで得た「生徒中心の観察手法」や「学習拠点の活用法」、そして「学年間のスムーズな連携」に関する知見を、KIAのカリキュラム・ラボや初等教育チームに共有し、日々の教育活動に活かしていく予定です。
最後になりますが、心温まるおもてなしで私たちを迎え入れてくださったジェンキン家、そしてRGSのすべての関係者の皆様に、心より感謝申し上げます。
As part of Kansai International Academy’s commitment to global collaboration and continuous pedagogical growth, Jay and Minako—in our roles as system leaders of the ELC and Kindergarten departments—recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in a one-week teacher exchange program at Rockhampton Grammar School (RGS) in regional Queensland, Australia.
During our time there, we were warmly welcomed by our wonderful host family, Lisa Jenkin (Head of English) and Barry Jenkin (Head of Year). Living with fellow school leaders provided a fantastic opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the Australian school culture. We spent many evenings exchanging ideas about educational leadership, pastoral care, and the unique dynamics of boarding school life long after the school day had ended.
We also received an incredibly warm welcome from Ashleigh Harvey, the Communications Officer, who took us on an extensive tour of the wider campus. We were amazed by the diverse facilities, including the school farm, expansive rugby fields, camp site and workout rooms, as well as the cooking and art rooms. Additionally, Kirsten May Thomas from the boarding team kindly showed us around the boarding houses, giving us a wonderful glimpse into the students’ daily lives in both the boys’ and girls’ dormitories.
Throughout the week, our primary pedagogical focus was observing the Early Learning Centre (ELC), Kindergarten, and Prep departments. We had incredibly fruitful meetings with Adeina Shakelton, the ELC Director, along with several lead educators and various other members of the amazing RGS staff. As system leaders, it was fascinating to discuss their operational frameworks and see firsthand how RGS successfully bridges child-led, play-based learning with the explicit instruction needed for early literacy and numeracy. We were particularly inspired by how they utilize their outdoor physical environments to encourage dynamic “risky play” and build student resilience.
A very special highlight of our trip was catching up with the current KIA students studying abroad at RGS. We had the chance to watch a music practice recital, and we were so proud to see one of our own KIA students performing beautifully! It was wonderful to talk with the other Japanese exchange students and see how much they are thriving and growing in this new environment.
This exchange program was a profoundly enriching experience. We are excited to bring actionable insights regarding student-centered observations, learning centers, and smooth academic transitions back to our Curriculum Lab and early years teams at KIA. A massive thank you to the RGS community and the Jenkin family for their exceptional hospitality!
