1月24日（土）、関西国際学園の生徒、保護者、引率の教員計9名で、障がいのある方々が暮らすチェシャーホーム「はんしん自立の家」を訪問しました。
チェシャーホームとは、イギリスのレオナルド・チェシャー卿によって始められた、身体に障がいのある方のための「暮らしの場」です。地域社会の中で、一人ひとりが主体性を持ち、自由に生活できる場として運営されています。
今回の訪問では、昨年の5月から学校で育て、収穫した綿花をお届けしました。そして、その綿花を使って、入居者の方々や講師の方、施設の職員の皆さまと一緒に、綿を種と繊維に分け、糸を紡ぐ体験をさせていただきました。入居者の皆さまと一緒に笑い合う場面も多く見られ、心が通い合う温かな時間を過ごすことができました。
その後、職員の方に施設内をご案内いただきました。入居者の方々の暮らしを支えるための人手が不足していることや、毎日を楽しく過ごしてもらうために、様々なイベントやアクティビティの企画・運営に力を尽くされていることを知り、参加者にとっても「自分たちにできることは何だろう」と考える大切なきっかけになりました。
今回の訪問は当時高校2年生の生徒が立ち上げたCAS活動の一環である「コットンプロジェクト」の集大成となります。関西国際学園のコミュニティが障がい者の方々と関わる機会を設け、理解を深めることを目的としています。今回の経験を通して得た気づきや学びを大切にしながら、今後も障がいのある方々に限らず多様な背景や境遇を持つ人々との相互理解を深め、より支え合えるコミュニティづくりにつながる活動に、積極的に取り組んでいきたいと思います。
On January 24th (Sat.), a group of students, parents, and teachers from our school visited the Cheshire Home “Hanshin Jiritsu no Ie”, a residence for people with special needs.
Cheshire Homes are residential communities for people with special needs. It was originally founded by Lord Leonard Cheshire in the UK, and is run as a place where each individual can live independently as a member of the local community.
During the visit, they delivered the cotton flowers that had been grown and harvested at our school. Using this cotton, they had the opportunity to work with the residents, instructors, and staff members to separate the cotton into seeds and fibers and try spinning the threads. There were many moments where they shared laughter with the residents, and they spent a warm and heartfelt time connecting with one another.
Afterwards, a staff member gave us a short tour of the facility. They learned about the shortage of members needed to support the residents’ daily lives, as well as the great effort the staff make to plan and run various activities and events so the residents can enjoy their days. This became an important opportunity for the participants to reflect on what they might be able to do.
This visit is the culmination of the “Cotton Project”, part of the CAS activities initiated by a G11 student at the time. The project aims to create opportunities for the KIA community to interact with people with special needs and to deepen mutual understanding. Cherishing the insights and lessons gained through this experience, we hope to continue engaging in activities that “foster mutual understanding among people from diverse backgrounds and circumstances, and contribute to building a more supportive community.”
