私たちが普段食べているものがどのように作られ、どこから来るのかを知ることは、すべての子どもたちにとって大切な教育の一環です。
今年度、関西国際学園のG6（小学6年生）は、田植えから食卓にご飯が並ぶまでのプロセスを自分たちの手で体験する貴重な機会を得ることができました。
活動が始まったのは6月中旬。灘浜サイエンスクラブの清水先生をお招きし、6年生は学校のビオトープで、一粒一粒、丁寧に米の苗を植え付けました。その後の数ヶ月間、小さな苗が日々背を伸ばし、成長していく様子を、みんなで見守りました。
そしてついに、2025年11月6日、記念すべき第一回目のKIA稲刈りの日を迎えました！
6年生たちは、清水先生がこの日のために特注してくださった伝統的な道具を使い、鎌で稲を刈り取り、手作業で脱穀を行いました。さらに、自分たちの手で玄米を精米する作業にも挑戦。作業の途中、勇気を出して収穫したばかりの生のお米を試食してみる児童もいました！
この一連の体験を通し、児童、先生、そしてPTO環境委員会のメンバーも全員が、米農家の方々の大変な労力を実感しました。
また機械が登場するずっと以前から、大変な重労働を担ってこられた農家の方々に対し、より深い感謝の念を抱くことができました。
Understanding where our food comes from is an important part of every student’s education. This year, our Grade 6 students had the unique opportunity to experience firsthand how rice makes the journey from field to table.
In mid-June, the G6 students, joined by special guest Mr. Shimizu from the Nadahama Science Club, gathered to plant rice in our school’s biotope. Over the following months, the entire KIA community watched as the young plants grew taller and greener each day.
Then, on November 6, 2025, we celebrated our very first KIA Rice Harvest! The Grade 6 students cut and hand-threshed the rice using a traditional device custom-made by Mr. Shimizu for this special event. They even polished the grains by hand, and more than a few brave students tried tasting the raw rice along the way!
Through this experience, students, teachers, and members of the PTO environment committee all gained a deeper appreciation for the hard work of rice farmers, especially those who labored long before modern machines made the process easier.
