Safeguarding class

K2: During a safeguarding class for K2, we started reading the book “Ask First, Monkey!” Students were very interested in the pictures and storyline and were surprised when Monkey kept tickling his friends. We talked about the importance of asking permission- “Can I hug you?” or “Can I tickle you?”- and about what we can do when someone does something we don’t like, such as telling them to stop. Last, we practiced saying “yes, it’s okay” or “stop, please” during roleplay situations, such as being tickled or hugged.

K3:In K3, we encourage the students to think for themselves and come up with their own answers and opinions. First we asked the students if they remembered anything about the safeguarding class from last year, and many of them confidently replied, “I remember!”
Then we had story time and read the book “Daiji Daiji Dokoda?” and had a question and answer time to deepen their understanding of the book. After the story time, we used dolls to let the students identify the private zones.
The students were also able to connect what they learned to their daily lives. They talked about when they are changing for gym class they should respect each other by not looking or making fun of each other. They learned that whenever they feel uncomfortable or anxious about a situation that they can say, “No,” even to their parents, siblings, or teachers. The teachers were able to feel that the students had a good understanding and healthy respect for the topic.
