In our UOI "Sharing the Planet," we explored the central idea that "People can contribute to create a peaceful world." We investigated global disputes and conflicts, both past and present, examining their similarities and differences.
Students conducted research on conflicts of personal interest, presenting their findings to family members during our Open Day.
Our students have embarked on an exciting journey of language and social studies exploration this unit. We've delved into the world of expository and argumentative writing, with a connection to our UOI on conflict and peace.
Students compared and contrasted the Japanese and American governments, gaining valuable insights into different political structures. This knowledge was put into practice through a mock Japanese Diet session, where students engaged in lively debates and voting on various topics, enhancing their critical thinking and public speaking skills.
We also explored the genre of historical fiction, examining how authors use real historical events as backdrops for compelling narratives. This led to a creative writing exercise where students crafted first-person narratives from the perspective of fictional characters set in actual historical conflicts. This activity not only improved their writing skills but also deepened their understanding of historical events and their impact on individuals.
Throughout the unit, students have strengthened their research, analysis, and communication abilities while developing a broader worldview. These skills will serve them well as they continue to grow as informed, articulate global citizens.
To understand the actions of people in conflict, we studied personal narratives and documentary footage. This approach helped students develop open-mindedness and empathy, as they tried to comprehend the circumstances and thought processes of those involved in conflicts. A key realization was that opposing sides often have more in common than they initially perceive.
We also delved into various ways of making peace. Through this exploration, students came to understand that achieving and maintaining peace is a complex process, particularly when striving for equity and fairness.
Throughout the unit, students honed their research, presentation, and critical thinking skills. They learned to approach sensitive topics with care and consideration, developing a more nuanced understanding of global issues. This inquiry has equipped them with valuable insights into conflict resolution and the importance of promoting peace in our shared world.
